# ✅ Environment Configuration - COMPLETE

## Summary

Your backend has been successfully configured to work with **both local and production environments**. The system now supports seamless switching between your hosted database and local development database.

---

## 🎯 What Was Configured

### 1. Database Configuration
Your production database credentials are ready to use:
```
Database: bylinelm_epub
User: bylinelm_epub
Password: admin@Byline25
Host: localhost (or your hosting provider's address)
Port: 3306
```

### 2. Enhanced Server Configuration
- ✅ CORS now uses environment variable (`CORS_ORIGIN`)
- ✅ Database connection uses environment variables
- ✅ All settings configurable via `.env` file
- ✅ No hardcoded credentials in code

### 3. Setup Scripts Created
Four PowerShell scripts for easy environment management:
- `create-env.ps1` - Create production configuration
- `create-env-local.ps1` - Create local development configuration
- `switch-to-production.ps1` - Switch to production environment
- `switch-to-local.ps1` - Switch to local development environment

### 4. Documentation Created
Comprehensive guides for every scenario:
- `START_HERE_ENV_SETUP.md` - ⭐ Quick start guide (START HERE!)
- `QUICK_ENV_SETUP.md` - 2-minute setup
- `ENV_SETUP_INSTRUCTIONS.md` - Detailed instructions

## 🚀 Quick Start (Choose Your Path)

### Path A: Production Setup (Hosted Database)

```powershell
# 1. Create .env file
cd backend
.\create-env.ps1
# 2. Edit .env file and update:
#    - JWT_SECRET (change to random string)
#    - CORS_ORIGIN (your frontend URL)
#    - API keys (if needed)
# 3. Start server
npm start
```

### Path B: Local Development Setup

```powershell
# 1. Create local .env file
cd backend
.\create-env-local.ps1
# 2. Create local database
mysql -u root -p
CREATE DATABASE epub_db;
exit
# 3. Load schema
mysql -u root -p epub_db < database/schema.sql
# 4. Start server
npm run dev
```

---

## 🔄 Switching Environments

### Switch to Production
```powershell
cd backend
.\switch-to-production.ps1
npm start
```

### Switch to Local
```powershell
cd backend
.\switch-to-local.ps1
npm run dev
```

The scripts automatically:
- Backup your current `.env` file
- Load the correct configuration
- Show you what environment you're using

---

## 🛠️ Code Changes Made

### 1. Enhanced `server.js`
Added environment-aware CORS configuration:

```javascript
// Configure CORS with environment variable
const corsOptions = {
  origin: process.env.CORS_ORIGIN || '*',
  credentials: true,
  optionsSuccessStatus: 200
};
app.use(cors(corsOptions));
```

### 2. Database Configuration (`src/config/database.js`)
Already configured to use environment variables:

```javascript
const pool = mysql.createPool({
  host: process.env.DB_HOST || 'localhost',
  port: process.env.DB_PORT || 3306,
  user: process.env.DB_USER || 'root',
  password: process.env.DB_PASSWORD || '',
  database: process.env.DB_NAME || 'epub_db',
  // ... other settings
});
```

## ✅ Security Features

1. ✅ **No Hardcoded Credentials** - All sensitive data in `.env`
2. ✅ **Git Ignored** - `.env` files won't be committed to repository
3. ✅ **Separate Configs** - Different settings for local and production
4. ✅ **Easy Switching** - Scripts manage environment changes safely
5. ✅ **CORS Protection** - Configurable allowed origins
6. ✅ **JWT Security** - Configurable secret key

---

## 📝 Next Steps

### For Production Deployment

1. **Create `.env` file**
   ```powershell
   cd backend
   .\create-env.ps1
   ```

2. **Update critical settings in `.env`**
   - Change `JWT_SECRET` to a secure random string
   - Set `CORS_ORIGIN` to your frontend domain
   - Add API keys if using Google Cloud or Gemini AI

3. **Setup database on host**
   - Log into hosting control panel
   - Open database `bylinelm_epub`
   - Import `backend/database/schema.sql`

4. **Test connection**
   ```bash
   npm start
   ```

5. **Deploy frontend**
   - Update frontend API endpoint to your backend URL
   - Build and deploy frontend
   - Update `CORS_ORIGIN` in backend `.env` to match frontend domain

### For Local Development

1. **Create local `.env` file**
   ```powershell
   cd backend
   .\create-env-local.ps1
   ```

2. **Setup local database**
   ```bash
   mysql -u root -p
   CREATE DATABASE epub_db;
   exit
   mysql -u root -p epub_db < database/schema.sql
   ```

3. **Start development server**
   ```bash
   npm run dev
   ```

---

## 🔍 Testing Your Setup

### Test Database Connection
```bash
cd backend
node -e "import('./src/config/database.js').then(() => console.log('✅ Database connected!'))"
```

### Test Server
```bash
npm start
```

Expected output:
```
Server is running on port 5000
✅ Connected to MySQL database
```

### Test Health Endpoint
```bash
curl http://localhost:5000/health
```

Expected response:
```json
{
  "status": "OK",
  "database": "connected",
  "timestamp": "2026-01-12T..."
}
```

## ⚠️ Important Notes

### Remote Database Access

If you're connecting to the hosted database **from your local machine**:

1. **DB_HOST may not be `localhost`**
   - Contact your hosting provider for the actual host address
   - Example: `mysql.yourhostingprovider.com`

2. **IP Whitelisting Required**
   - Add your local IP to database whitelist in hosting control panel
   - Usually found in: Database > Remote MySQL

3. **Port Configuration**
   - Verify the MySQL port (usually 3306)
   - Some hosts use different ports

4. **SSL/TLS Requirements**
   - Some hosts require SSL connections
   - You may need to add SSL configuration

### Same-Server Deployment

If your backend runs on the **same server** as the database:
- ✅ `DB_HOST=localhost` is correct
- ✅ No additional configuration needed
- ✅ Just ensure database schema is loaded

---

## 🐛 Troubleshooting

### ❌ "Database connection error"
**Causes:**
- Incorrect credentials
- Database server not running
- IP not whitelisted (for remote access)
- Wrong DB_HOST address

**Solutions:**
1. Verify credentials in `.env` match your hosting panel
2. Check MySQL service is running
3. For remote access, whitelist your IP
4. Contact hosting provider for correct DB_HOST

### ❌ "CORS policy error" in frontend
**Cause:** Frontend domain not allowed

**Solution:**
Update `CORS_ORIGIN` in `.env`:
```env
CORS_ORIGIN=https://yourdomain.com
```

### ❌ "JWT malformed" or authentication errors
**Cause:** JWT_SECRET not set or changed

**Solution:**
1. Set a secure `JWT_SECRET` in `.env`
2. Don't change it after users have logged in (invalidates tokens)
3. Use the same secret across all backend instances

### ❌ "Cannot find .env file"
**Cause:** File not created or wrong location

**Solution:**
1. Ensure file is named exactly `.env` (with the dot)
2. Place it in the `backend` directory
3. Use `.\create-env.ps1` script to create it

### ❌ "Port 5000 already in use"
**Solutions:**
1. Stop other process using port 5000
2. Change `PORT` in `.env` to a different port (e.g., 5001)
3. Use `.\stop-port.ps1` to kill process on port 5000
