# ✅ Environment Configuration Complete

## What Was Done

I've set up your backend to work seamlessly in both **local** and **production** environments with your hosted database.

## Files Created

### 1. **Setup Scripts** (PowerShell for Windows)
- `create-env.ps1` - Creates production `.env` file
- `create-env-local.ps1` - Creates local development `.env` file
- `switch-to-production.ps1` - Switches to production environment
- `switch-to-local.ps1` - Switches to local development environment

### 2. **Documentation**
- `QUICK_ENV_SETUP.md` - Quick 2-minute setup guide
- `ENV_SETUP_INSTRUCTIONS.md` - Detailed setup instructions
- `README_ENV_SETUP.md` - Complete environment configuration reference
- `ENV_CONFIGURATION_SUMMARY.md` - This file

## Your Production Database Configuration

```
Host: localhost
Port: 3306
Database: bylinelm_epub
User: bylinelm_epub
Password: admin@Byline25
```

## 🚀 Quick Start

### Step 1: Create the .env file

**Run this command in PowerShell from the backend directory:**
```powershell
cd backend
.\create-env.ps1
```

Or manually create `backend/.env` with this content:
```env
NODE_ENV=production
PORT=5000
DB_HOST=localhost
DB_PORT=3306
DB_USER=bylinelm_epub
DB_PASSWORD=admin@Byline25
DB_NAME=bylinelm_epub
JWT_SECRET=your-super-secret-jwt-key-change-this
GOOGLE_API_KEY=your-google-api-key-here
GEMINI_API_KEY=your-gemini-api-key-here
CORS_ORIGIN=http://localhost:3000
MAX_FILE_SIZE=52428800
UPLOAD_DIR=./uploads
TEMP_DIR=./temp
```

### Step 2: Update Important Settings

Open the `.env` file and update:
1. **JWT_SECRET** - Generate a secure random string
2. **GOOGLE_API_KEY** - Add if using Google Cloud TTS
3. **GEMINI_API_KEY** - Add if using Gemini AI
4. **CORS_ORIGIN** - Set to your frontend domain (e.g., `https://yourdomain.com`)

### Step 3: Set Up Database on Host

Upload and execute the database schema:
```bash
# The file is located at: backend/database/schema.sql
# Execute it in your hosting control panel (phpMyAdmin, cPanel, etc.)
```

### Step 4: Start the Server

```bash
cd backend
npm start
```

You should see:
```
✅ Server is running on port 5000
✅ Connected to MySQL database
```

## Environment Switching

### Switch to Local Development
```powershell
cd backend
.\create-env-local.ps1
npm run dev
```

### Switch Back to Production
```powershell
cd backend
.\switch-to-production.ps1
npm start
```

## How It Works

### Your Database Configuration File
Located at: `backend/src/config/database.js`

It already reads from environment variables:
```javascript
const pool = mysql.createPool({
  host: process.env.DB_HOST || 'localhost',
  port: process.env.DB_PORT || 3306,
  user: process.env.DB_USER || 'root',
  password: process.env.DB_PASSWORD || '',
  database: process.env.DB_NAME || 'epub_db',
  // ... other settings
});
```

### Environment File Priority
1. `.env` - Active configuration (used by the application)
2. `.env.production` - Backup of production settings
3. `.env.local` - Backup of local development settings

The switching scripts automatically manage these files for you.

## Security Features ✅

1. ✅ `.env` files are in `.gitignore` - Your credentials won't be committed
2. ✅ Separate configs for local and production
3. ✅ Easy switching between environments
4. ✅ No hardcoded credentials in code

## Important Notes

### For Hosted Database Access

If you're connecting to the hosted database **remotely** (not from the same server):

1. **DB_HOST might not be `localhost`**
   - Contact your hosting provider for the actual host address
   - It might be something like: `mysql.yourhostingprovider.com`

2. **IP Whitelisting**
   - Add your local IP to the database whitelist in hosting control panel
   - This is usually in: Database > Remote MySQL or similar

3. **Port Configuration**
   - Confirm the MySQL port (usually 3306)
   - Some hosts use different ports for security

4. **SSL/TLS Requirements**
   - Some hosts require SSL connections
   - You may need to add SSL config to `database.js`

### For Same-Server Deployment

If your backend runs on the **same server** as the database:
- ✅ `DB_HOST=localhost` is correct
- ✅ No additional configuration needed
- ✅ Just ensure the database schema is loaded

## Testing Your Setup

### Test Database Connection
```bash
cd backend
node -e "import('./src/config/database.js').then(m => console.log('Database connected!'))"
```

### Test Full Server
```bash
cd backend
npm start
```

### Test API Endpoint
```bash
curl http://localhost:5000/health
```

Should return:
```json
{
  "status": "OK",
  "database": "connected",
  "timestamp": "..."
}
```

## Troubleshooting

### ❌ Cannot connect to database
**Solution:**
- Verify credentials are correct
- Check if MySQL service is running
- For remote access, ensure IP is whitelisted
- Verify the actual DB_HOST address with hosting provider

### ❌ CORS errors in frontend
**Solution:**
- Update `CORS_ORIGIN` in `.env` to match your frontend URL
- For multiple origins, you may need to modify `server.js` CORS config

### ❌ JWT authentication fails
**Solution:**
- Ensure `JWT_SECRET` is set to a secure random string
- Don't use the default placeholder value

### ❌ File upload errors
**Solution:**
- Ensure `uploads` and `temp` directories exist
- Check permissions (should be writable)
- Verify `MAX_FILE_SIZE` is appropriate

## Next Steps

1. ✅ Create `.env` file (using script or manually)
2. ✅ Update JWT_SECRET, API keys, CORS_ORIGIN
3. ✅ Load database schema on hosted database
4. ✅ Test server connection
5. ✅ Deploy your frontend
6. ✅ Update frontend to point to your backend URL
